Unit 2 pre production L01

 Briefs

A brief is defined in media terms as a resource that outlines the objectives, target audience, budget, and other criteria that are important to the client in the production of the media product.

Product Briefs

Ultimate Astronomy would like LiveWire to create an interactive kiosk game that helps children learn about the elements of the Solar System through a series of tasks and quizzes. They would like LiveWire to create a fun yet educational game that will test key information, such as the names of the planets and the distance of each planet from the Sun. As part of the game an avatar will be travelling across the solar system. The avatar will take the form of an astronaut character and will travel to different planets in each level of the game.

The game must embed short reviews at the end of each level and a piece of narrative to allow the children to test their knowledge in quizzes. The game should contain images and sound effects/speech that will help the children learn the facts. The app should be bright, colorful and engaging so that children want to access the content. The game is aimed at 7-13 year old's. Ultimate Astronomy hope that the content will be engaging enough to appeal to a range of cultural groups. Ultimate Astronomy would like the game to be available and ready to be installed in the center in six months’ time.

Ethical issues Consequences

Legal action against the organisation

Product being banned from sale

Reputation of the organisation

Loss of business

Regulatory Bodies

  1. ASA- The Advertising Standards Authority
  2. BBFC-British Board Of Film Classification
  3. PEGI- Pan European Game Information
  4. OFCOM- The Office Of Communication
  5. PRS- Performing Right Society For Music
  6. IPSO- Independent Press Standard Organisation.
  7. W3C- The World Wide Web Consortium.

ASA Case Study

KFC 2017 advert.
Many people found the advert cruel to chickens and apparently made many vegans uncomfortable towards what was being displayed. This was because it had a chicken dancing its way while listening to DMX X gonna give it to ya, ready to be slaughtered for your next meal.

BBFC Case Study

 The Batman.
The movie The Batman got over 22 complaints to the BBFC as many people believed that the age rating was too restrictive being a 15. The BBFC then responded back by saying that the film mainly has a dark tone throughout the film, along with the film depicting its world as less fantastical than the previous Batman films.

PEGI

PEGI changes the age rating for games that encourage or have any influence on gambling has now been changed to being an 18+. People have complained to PEGI about this as they believe the 18+ rating is now being used in the wrong way. This is because traditionally the 18+ was used for games that included a mass use of violence and anything inappropriate to people under the age of 18. However, games that are now containing uses of gambling are now being turned to 18 even Nintendo games that have modes allowing you to play Black Jack.

OFCOM

OFCOM put an image of the most complained broadcasting broadbands of 100,000 complaints from fewest to most. From the image, Shell energy has the most complaints of 27. This was because customers complained about faults, service and services getting installed. Many also complained about Shell energy being too expensive to keep using.

Print

When publishing a magazine, the company must consider:
  • The cost of the printing product.
  • The layout of the magazine.
  • The design of the magazine.
  • The distribution of the magazine.
  • How they are going to promote and advertise the magazine.
For example the Times magazine in the USA comes to around $268,000 USD when publishing their magazine. This is because the cost factors they have to consider is page size, format, the use of colour in the magazine and how many they have to print. Also, the company would also have to decide on the price of magazine for them to get a stable amount of money back in order to keep distributing the product.

Most Expensive Cost for magazines

  1. Advertising and promoting
  2. design of the product(including colour)
  3. Page Size
  4. Layout
  5. Format
The reason why i have put Advertising and promoting at the top for the most expensive. Is because when having to advertise your products you will have to pay a certain amount of money to companies with a wide range of prices. This is because most people from bigger companies and advertising groups will be able distribute the product further than smaller companies.
