LO1-Media Ownership

Media Ownership
  • Important digital media organisation that owns subsidiary companies.
  • For example, 21st century Fox. They own other companies e.g. 20th century fox, fox TV, fox home entertainment, sky news. 
  • Deadpool is one of their recent success stories with a sequel in 2018.
  • However, 21st Century Fox is now owned by Disney from march  2019.
  • A conglomerate, whose subsidiaries make more than one type of product is called cross media ownership.
Advantages of being a conglomerate
  • More options in terms of how they advertise.
  • Monopoly over the content that audience access.
  • External company's are not needed to hire (they can produce the product themselves) 
  • They can make more money from these different audiences.
  • Audience will become bigger granting more fame.
Conglomerate
  • Vertical integration/ value chain
  • Horizontal integration-  an effect of having a vertical integration
  • Cross media ownership-  as soon as a conglomerate can publish more than one type of media.
  • Synergy/ cross promotion 
 Vertical integration/ value chain
  • Production-Pre Production- filming- post production
  • Distribution- getting it out to platforms- streaming services- advertising and marketing. 
  • Exchange- exhibition- audience views the product.
  • how a conglomerate is able to produce and distribute a product and exchange it for money.   
Horizontal integration

  • Horizontal Integration- the ability to be able to distribute products on different platforms. 
  • Different place the product is distributed e.g. films, Disney+, Fox TV and newspaper.
  • Synergy is the effect of horizontal integration.
Independent Companies  
  • Smaller digital media organisation
  • Not owned by a larger company/ conglomerate.
  • An example of this is Warp Films, who made the film/ TV program This is England.
  • Distribution is usually helped by a conglomerate.
  • Commonly work in a joint venture with another company to produce and or distribute.
  • No subsidiaries.
  • Can only produce films
  • After producing the product they a joint venture with another company to distribute the film. E.G. Channel 4. 
Public Service Broadcaster 
  • BBC largest PSB in the UK
  • Funded by the public via the TV license
  • Remit to inform, educate, entertain.

  • Oldest
  • Funding TV license 
  • Radio- R4, R1
  • BBC film 
  • TV- BBC1,2,3,4, Dave
  • Magazine- Radio Times, Classical
