Exam Question
Identify and explain two differences in how digital media producers target mainstream and niche audiences. Use examples to support your answer.
Media producers can target mainstream audience by using print magazines that have different types of content shown on the magazine, that could entice a wide range of a mainstream audience's to that magazine. However, for a niche audience, the magazine would focus on only one topic which lacks the use of other content. This means that a niche audience will be looking for a certain topic from the magazine that's in their interest.
BBC Radio 4
- The target audience for BBC Radio 4 are adults from 25+
- The shows that are being broadcasted on the BBC Radio 4 are podcasts with a different range of verity of choices to listen to.
- This wont appeal to a younger audience as it has podcasts to do with food, life of sea creatures and million doller lover. Whereas a younger audience might listen to BBC radio 1 as it has modern music that a younger audience would be familiar with.
PSB
These are channels that are made for the public and dont focus on financial gain(most channels are a PSB). The BBC is a funded through the TV license so there is no need for adverts.
