Main stream audience is an all together audience. A niche audience are people who are into a specified interest.
For example, BBC radio 1 can have a main stream audience as the radio station plays a different variety of music for their audience who are listening to the music being played. However, BBC radio 4 is a niche audience as it is all podcasts meaning people would only go on BBC 4 to listen to the podcasts.
if a media product is said to have a mainstream or mass audience. it will appeal to a wide range of ages, groups and cultures. they are often distributed by a lager conglomerates. Due to these factors they tend to make a lager profit due to the wide audience appeal.
Blockbusters: Appeal to a broad audience. Not made for a specific group. Large budgets to make a profit.
Neche audience: Are often smaller and target a more specific audience(based on interests, skills or beliefs). Often have a loyal following from their target audience.
Mainstream media products
Film: Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. I picked these films because they have a large audience and have both made a wide range amount of money from each film.
TV: Top Gear and Blue Planet. These are played on tv daily or weekly for people who are either into cars or wildlife from around the world. This would make them successful as it has the required interests people want.
Video Games: Call of Duty and Mario. Both of these games have a wide range of different fans as they both are completely different to each other but changed the way of the gaming community making them both successful.
Niche media products
Film: Johnny English and Gangster Granny. These are both niche films as it will be mainly be people from Britain who will be familiar with these films as it is set in the UK with main stream British actors who star in these movies.
TV: Black Adder and School Of Comedy. These are both niche films as they didn't main stream from the other medias around the country but gained popularity from in the UK as they are both comedies and stuck with the old genre of comedy.
Video Games: Day Z and Enlisted. Both of these games are not well known around the gaming community but are done so well. Enlisted is a free game so it is easy to play and is based of the world wars, and Day Z is about surviving a zombie apocalypses with real life features to how you survive.
ABC1: Targeted the most by print companies.

This is targeted at a ABC1 audience because people in this category will be educated enough to have the patience to read all the writing and understand what its about.
The Daily Express would have an audience of either adults or middle aged people. This is because the main headlines for the Daily Express are more to do with Politics and wouldn't bring any interest towards the younger generation.
Demographics
When media producers study the breakdown of their target audiences based on variables that make audiences different from each other. For example, age, ethnicity and gender.
Radio one contains the more recent music released to attract a more younger audience that they will probably be far more familiar with. Also, the presenters on BBC 1 are also in the ages from 20-30 so they will be more understanding towards what this generation would listen to.
BBC 2: Is a mixed genre channel appealing from a broad adult audience with programs with programs of depth and substances.
BBC 3: It was first launched in February 2003 targeting 16 to 34 year old's. Also, it covers all different types of genres to have a wide spread of audience from the range of ages listed above.
BARB
BARB is a continuous survey undertaken to determine the ownership of television equipment and demographic characteristics of the population.
The role of BARB is to provide the industry standard television audience measurement service for broadcasters and the advertising industry.
The BBC use BARB, as they wanted to gather data on what their audience watches the most. They did this to play their most popular shows to gain more money, rather than their other shows that were not as popular.

RAJAR
RAJAR is a radio joint audience research.
RAJAR estimates the listenership from different radios. For example, Who listens, Where, When, and How.
Radiocentre uses RAJAR for the uses of measuring audience of who listens to their radio.
This shows that more people listened to the radio by using a radio rather than a phone, tv, and laptop.
From 2011- 2020 25+ adults listening to the radio on phone or tablet went up by 19%.

This is because the newspaper talks about how social websites harm children, which will drag in an audience full of adults who have a child of their own to learn how to keep them safe. it also includes information of people making money with university challenges. It also has questions as the title for the other heading in bold, so the right audience sees the information first and carry on reading.
The Daily Telegraph started in 1855 and was founded by Colonel Arthur B. Sleigh. The Daily Telegraph won the Digital Award.
The audience for the Daily Telegraph area adults 35+ for all genders, as the image shows us the Newspaper is mainly about politics, the social class for this would be ABC1 group. This is because we can see that in the front cover of the magazine it has an image of someone to do with politics, with also the fact that the other headlines has the words Tories and the mentions of economics. This tells us that the newspaper mainly targets an audience who has interests in politics as that is what it specializes in.
The Guardian was first founded in 1821, and was first known as The Manchester Guardian before having its named changed in 1959 to the Guardian.
The range of age for the newspaper is 15-84 as it involves information for all ages, as it talks about celebrites, politics and other information regarding Britain. We can see this as it has an image of albert Einstein on the front. This could indicate that the newspaper could also talk about history or math's. We can also see an image of Cillian Murphy who is an actor. This means for the people who are interested in reading about Cillian Murphy can now.
The Times was first founded in 1785 by John Walter in order to record the occurrence of time.
The Times is for an 35+ age group as the newspaper is mainly to do with politics. We can also tell this is true as we have rishi sunak as the main focus image on the newspaper. This also means that the social class for The Times would also be ABC1.
